Large herbivore impact on plant biomass along multiple resource gradients in the Serengeti

چکیده

Abstract Herbivores form an important link in the transfer of energy within a food web and are strongly influenced by bottom‐up trophic cascades. Current hypotheses suggest that herbivore consumption impact on plants should scale positively with plant resource availability. However, depending effect resources quantity quality, may vary different types resources. We test four alternative for relationship between biomass, biomass gradients, each based how might affect abundance quality to herbivores. measured non‐consecutive years long‐term grazing exclosure experiment Serengeti National Park includes seven sites substantially rainfall soil nitrogen (N) phosphorus (P). Our data supported hypothesis is controlled this case driven P, as effects decreased higher but increased greater not N content. To our knowledge, first experimental study indicate wild mammalian herbivory associated P availability rather than N. Synthesis . results addition water N, play more role driving interactions terrestrial systems previously realized. Given uncertainties due climate change increasing anthropogenic manipulations global cycles, findings emphasize need consider multiple understanding be environmental variables.

Shifts in species richness, herbivore specialization, and plant resistance along elevation gradients

Environmental gradients have been postulated to generate patterns of diversity and diet specialization, in which more stable environments, such as tropical regions, should promote higher diversity and specialization. Using field sampling and phylogenetic analyses of butterfly fauna over an entire alpine region, we show that butterfly specialization (measured as the mean phylogenetic distance be...

Modeling the Impact of Plant Toxicity on Plant–Herbivore Dynamics

Numerous empirical studies over the past two decades have documented substantial effects of plant toxins on diet choice and feeding behavior of herbivores, but analytical models have failed thus far to incorporate toxin-mediated effects of browsing on plant population dynamics. We study a mathematical model that incorporates plant toxicity in the functional response of plant–herbivore interacti...

Turnover of plant lineages shapes herbivore phylogenetic beta diversity along ecological gradients.

Understanding drivers of biodiversity patterns is of prime importance in this era of severe environmental crisis. More diverse plant communities have been postulated to represent a larger functional trait-space, more likely to sustain a diverse assembly of herbivore species. Here, we expand this hypothesis to integrate environmental, functional and phylogenetic variation of plant communities as...
